Free Crochet Pattern: Newborn Holland Hat

Even though it is still winter where I live, I am ready for spring. I have been thinking about all the things that I can make with crochet flowers. This hat is one of them! It would be cute for a newborn girl any time of the year but especially in celebration of the arrival of spring! I made this hat with a 100% cotton yarn- Willow Meadow from Willow Yarns. This is the softest cotton that I have ever worked with and I really enjoy crocheting with it.

Materials needed:

• U.S. G- 4.0 MM crochet hook

• Worsted weight yarn (one that's on the thinner side)- used here:

-Color A: Willow Meadow in Cream

-Color B: Willow Meadow in Peony
-Color C: Willow Meadow in Phlox

• Tapestry needle for sewing in the ends

Abbreviations:
• MR= magic ring

• ch= chain
• sc= single crochet

• hdc= half double crochet
• dc= double crochet

• sl st= slip stitch

Finished size:

• Newborn- to fits 12-13" head circumference (to make the hat bigger, just add more increase rows and increase the straight rows to make the hat as long as you would like)

Hat

1: With Color A, MR, ch 1 (does not count), 10 hdc in ring. Join with sl st in the top of the first hdc, not the ch 2. (10)

2: Ch 1, (2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in the next stitch) around. Join with sl st in the top of the first hdc. (30)
3: Ch 1, (2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in the next two stitches) around. Join with sl st in the top of the first hdc.

4: Ch 1, (2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in the next three stitches) around. Join with sl st in the top of the first hdc.

After round 4, my flat circle measured 3.5". If you are not close to this measurement, adjust hook size as necessary to get as close as possible to 3.5".

5-10: Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around. Join with sl st in the top of the first hdc.

11-15: Ch 1, *skip the first stitch and hdc in the next, hdc in the stitch that you skipped (to form an "x" stitch)*, repeat from * to * around. Join with an invisible join and weave in all ends.

At the end of round 15, my hat measured 4.25" from the crown to the bottom of the brim.

Flowers (Make 3- I made 2 with Peony & 1 with Phlox):

1: MR, ch 1, 5 sc in ring, pull to close, join with sl st into the first sc.

2: Ch 2, 3 dc in the same stitch, ch 2, sl st into the same st, *sl st into the next stitch, ch 2, 3 dc in the same stitch, ch 2, sl st into the same st*. Repeat from * to * around

To make the center part of the flower, attach your contrasting color to the back of the flower. I do this by tying a knot with the contrasting color to the long tail of the main color.

Next use a tapestry needle to pull the contrasting color up through the center of the MR and then down at one spot on the first petal, repeat again so that you have two lines on the first petal.

Then repeat the above around so that each petal has two lines going from the center to one part of the petal.

Repeat this for all three flowers.

Then attach the flowers to the hat and tah-dah! Finished!

Tutorial: How to Add a Zipper to a Crochet Pouch

I have been crocheting tons of pouches lately and I love lining them with a coordinating fabric and finishing them with a zipper. I'm not an expert at sewing by any means, but this method works for me. I use it every time and I am always happy with the results. I hope you enjoy this tutorial! I love the concept of car seat covers/canopies. When you use a regular blanket instead, it is always falling off and you are constantly picking it up off the ground. I made these adorable Valentine's headbands for my daughters. For three free crochet headband patterns and how I made them, see below! I saw the cutest heart headband floating around Pinterest and decided to make one for each of my daughters. The tutorial for the heart headband is here and the original heart pattern is here .
